The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton was officially instated in 1956.
However, its origin dates back to the late 1800s. Ukrainian Catholic immigrants homesteading in Western Canada found themselves in a strange land with no Ukrainian Byzantine churches. It was largely due to the efforts of Father Albert Lacombe and Metropolitan Andrej Sheptytsky in Ukraine that the foundation of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada was established.
The spiritual leader in Alberta at the present time is Bishop Lawrence Huculak, OSBM. |
