2017 ACSTA AGM & Convention

Catholic Trusteeship: A Call to Missionary Discipleship

November 17 - 19

Location: The Westin Edmonton - 10135 - 100 Street
Keynote Speaker: Most Rev. Frederick Henry and Rev. Stefano Penna
Hosted by: Alberta Catholic School Trustees' Association

In today’s world it seems like there are so many challenges and pressures to conform to a trendier secular lifestyle rather than one founded in faith in God. For Catholic Christians, it can be a real challenge to live a life that is true and fruitful to the Gospel values. It can be especially challenging for Catholic trustees to navigate these difficult waters at times, but for those who have made the call to serve in vocation as a Catholic Trustee, the rewards of service are immeasurable and always rewarding.

2017 is an election year for school trustees and there will be new faces around the table. With this in mind, the ACSTA is focussing its 2017 AGM and Convention around the theme of “Catholic Trusteeship: A Call to Missionary Discipleship.”

Keynote speakers for 2017 are Bishop Emeritus Henry as well as Fr. Stefano Penna, who will both be speaking on Catholic trusteeship. Bishop Henry will focus his talk around the theme "Education for freedom" - "time is greater than space" using advice from Pope Francis. He will speak about what the future of Catholic Education looks like, and how as a Catholic trustee, one must be a disciple of Jesus. How do Catholic trustees help promote and enhance their school boards to become places of learning that are simply not just tolerated but championed?

Fr. Penna will give two presentations, one on “Another Possible World” - the vision, and the other on “Excellence in Solidarity” – the way. His first presentation will focus on key ideas of Pope Francis to help one engage trusteeship as elders. “The only reason we engage ourselves in the field of education is the hope for a new mankind in another possible world” Pope Francis.

His second presentation will focus on Pope Francis’ proposals for excellence in effective solidarity as a tool for trusteeship that can strategically and faithfully equip Catholic school boards. “It is not sufficient to be “good” and “generous”: it is necessary to be intelligent, capable, effective” Pope Francis.

Catholic education is a unique partnership between the school, home and parish, and the Catholic school trustee, answering the vocation of trusteeship, is a steward for Catholic schools and Catholic education. This vocation is a call from the Church and the community to bring together faith and political life to share in the central mission of the Church: passing our Catholic faith on to our children.
