Catholic schools share long history and strong future in Alberta

What a long and wonderful tradition we have built of our schools are making an impact both within our Catholic education in Alberta. This issue of the Catholic communities and in the larger society. Dimension is honoring that tradition.

We have just celebrated Catholic Education Sunday. The theme this year was: Catholic Education: Good News for All. This is a poignant message that we carry into and out of our Catholic school communities.

As the biblical quote in the Bishops' Education Sunday Letter - included in this issue - says: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news" (Romans 10:15), it is our obligation as Catholics to proclaim the good news. This issue of the Catholic Dimension does just that; it works to celebrate and share the good news occuring in Catholic school communities.

On our front page you will find the final article in ACSTA's 5 Loaves 2 Fish project. In the article members of our Catholic schools communities across the province have detailed the valuable role that Catholic schools play in their lives. It is apparent that our schools are making an impact both within our communities and in the larger society.

The past year, and this upcoming year have been ones of celebration and anniversaries. Last year, Edmonton Catholic Schools celebrated their 120th year anniversary.

This year anniversary celebrations are planned for Calgary celebrating its 125th anniversary and for the 100th anniversary of the first school in St. Albert, one of the oldest Catholic schools in the province.

Finally Kevin Feehan's Legally Speaking article explores the School Act in Alberta from a Catholic perspective demonstrating the legal historical tradition of publicly-funded Catholic schools in Alberta and how this can be developed further in the future.

Catholic schools in Alberta are ever-changing and yet, they remain rooted in an historical faith and education tradition. It is this foundation that we celebrate and continue to build upon.
