Inspiring Catholic education part of our work
There is much to celebrate with our Catholic schools in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. We have established a strong community of Catholic education that works to instill in our students an education punctuated by the Gospel and the Sacraments.
Recently, we saw this strength displayed through the reactions of the Yellowknife Catholic school board to the Northwest Territories government plans to amalgamate a number of boards, including the education boards.
In response to this, the Catholic community - with input from all levels, including parents, students, administrators, trustees, and other stakeholders - rallied together through a series of actions, culminating in a march to the legislature. The bill for amalgamation has subsequently been withdrawn and is now being reconsidered by the Government of the Northwest Territories.
This action saw members of the community gather collectively around the notion of protecting Catholic schools. People spoke to the importance of having distinctly Catholic schools in their community.
The actions of the Yellowknife Catholic community are one example of how valued our Catholic schools are in both Alberta and the Northwest Territories. They have become a mainstay in our publicly funded education system, providing a distinct and quality education to students.
As a trustee, it is hopeful to remember that our work contributes to this celebration of Catholic education. Our efforts to ensure the vitality of Catholic schools are valued by the larger faith community.
While we often work in what seems to be isolated political realms, we must continue to remember that our work is integral to the success of Catholic education, but also to the Catholic community as a whole. We are a valuable part of the Church-home-school Catholic triad.
There are so many reasons to be inspired by the work of all involved with Catholic education in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Let us continue to honour and reflect upon our efforts as we rejoice in the many reasons that we have to be inspired by Catholic education.
